Lithuanian is one of the official languages of the Republic of Lithuania and also one of the official languages of the European Union. It is used by around 83.5 per cent Lithuanians. Unfortunately, there is no data about dialects of the Lithuanian language. What is known, however, is that there are less and less speakers who do use them. After the World War Two, the dialects were seen as a factor isolating their users from the rest of the society and as such they are superseded by the literary language . The Lithuanian Embassy in Poland states that currently about 15 thousand Lithuanians live in the territory of the Republic of Poland. Most of them (around 80 per cent) live in the Punsk District (Punskas).
According to the 2002 census, 5131 people declared to be of Lithuanian nationality and to be able to speak Lithuanian, and 74.4 per cent of people inhabiting Punsk District are Lithuanians.
