Writing
Modern Ukrainian writing system developed from Old Russian Cyrillic alphabet. The standard system was evolving throughout the whole 19th century and its development was influenced either by phonetic or historical and etymological principles. Whereas in Galicia, there were also proposals to base the writing system on the Latin alphabet and make it similar to that of Polish or Czech language. Modern experimental Ukrainian alphabets are most often influenced by the orthography of Josef Jireček who based it on the Czech orthography (#np.
