Statistics

According to various estimates, the Romani language is used as a first language by 8 to 15 million people. There are 16-25 thousand Romani speakers in Poland.
In the 2002 National Census 15.657 people possessing Polish citizenship listed Romani as (one of) the language(s) used at home, whereas 12.731 citizens described their nationality as Roma.
According to the 2011 National Census, 17 thousand Polish citizens identify themselves as Roma, 12 thousand of which declare to be Roma only, while 10 thousand put their Roma identity as their first choice.
According to Ethnologue over 35 thousand people speak Romani in Poland.
The number of speakers for whom Romani is either the second language or a foreign language is unknown. It may be surmised, however, that this number is, indeed, slight. Such speakers likely entered Roma families via marriage (which does not occur too often) or are members of a scarce scientific community (in Poland, non-Roma researchers who study Roma culture and speak the Romani languages can be counted on the fingers of one hand).
